Centro Stampa Quotidiani continues strategy by also equipping new press with Q.I. Press Controls

Oosterhout, April 2023 – Centro Stampa Quotidiani (CSQ) is the newest and largest printing center in Italy. They recently added an additional press to their inventory, a GOSS UNIVERSAL 75. This press was already equipped with Q.I. Press Controls’ (QIPC) IRS color register system. Now also the IDS system will be mounted in order to control closed loop color, dampening and fault detection.

CSQ has an annual production of about 100 million copies distributed throughout central-northern Italy. The product range exists from daily newspapers, to weeklies and monthlies, to individual production from very high to very small print runs. Some of the printed titles are Giornale di Brescia, L’Eco di Bergamo, La Provincia, Avvenire, Il Sole 24 Ore and also locally printed international titles like Bild am Sonntag. The print facility simultaneously produces with three shifts, seven days a week.

The relationship between CSQ and Q.I. Press Controls goes way back to 2004 when CSQ gave their first order. Over the years several additional orders have followed. Now the automation of all 4 WIFAG offset presses is at the maximum level with the optical measuring and control systems of QIPC. With production costs amongst the lowest in the sector, CSQ is able to offer competitive prices while providing very high printing quality.

CSQ’s latest press, their GOSS UNIVERSAL 75, was taken over from L’Adige (Trento) in 2019. This press was already fitted with QIPC’s IRS color register system and with the press controls solutions of QIPC’s sister company EAE Engineering Automation Electronics (EAE). After reassembling and recommissioning, the GOSS press turned out to work well. Dario De Cian, General Manager CSQ: ‘For the GOSS press we wanted to have the same working procedures, printing quality and low number of operators per shift as on our other 4 WIFAG presses. That is why we decided to invest in the IDS system. This in addition to the existing register systems. We bought our first IRS system for color register and cut-off control in 2004. So we cooperate with QIPC for almost twenty year. However when taking the GOSS press in operation in May, it will be the first time we will be working with EAE's press controls.”

The GOSS UNIVERASL 75 press consists of 5 printing units and 1 folder. The installation of the new 10 IDS-3D cameras comes with a new 3D platform that will also integrate the existing register camera’s. All camera’s will then work from one system, controlling color and cut-off register and closed loop color. Next to closed loop color, the IDS-3D camera’s will identify and adjust the dampening supply fully automatically. Another operational functionality will be fault detection. At the same time color measurements are taken, the IDS-3D checks both the printed and white paper areas for defects. When it detects problems such as faulty positioned plates, defects in print like toning/smearing and paper folds, the system provides an alarm and stores information for reporting purposes in the IQM.

The IQM (Intelligent Quality Management) was also part of this order. This management information system visualizes the quality of the printed matter produced. IQM is a web-based system that in this case will makes use of the measurement data from the IDS-3D. In addition to providing detailed information about the individual product quality, the IQM system can help CSQ to develop strategies and solutions to improve the production process.

Dario De Cian: “For the new investment, we expect the same excellent cooperation as we are used to receive from QIPC. Also with regard to results, we expect a continuation of previous made investments, namely high and consistent quality and reduction of the staff number on the press.”

Harold Drinhuyzen, Area Sales Manager QIPC for Italy: “CSQ is a state-of-the-art printing facility. The fact that they have continued their strategy by again investing in QIPC for their new press is a fantastic reward. It’s not just confirmation that our system proved their worth over the years. It also shows that good cooperation and support in the long term are highly valued.”

Dario De Cian, Managing Director CSQ

Dario De Cian "Also with regard to results, we expect a continuation of previous made investments, namely high and consistent quality and reduction of the staff number on the press.”
